Thanks to some great people over on Facebook there is yet another campaign following in the footsteps of the succesful Metallica for Christmas Number 1.
This time though its Jedward v The Smiths. The new Facebook group is hoping to make The Smiths – “How Soon Is Now?” the UK No 1 the 2nd week of Feb 2010 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the classic album Meat Is Murder and block Simon Cowell’s Jedward debut single at the same time.
The group has attracted 12,000 fans in a few days and continues to grow. It started off as a normal The Smiths fanpage but it’s now attracting music fans who are sick of Simon Cowell’s ongoing domination of the charts. They have already beaten a group promoting Girl’s Aloud and are now in direct competition with JEDWARD.
The groups page says..
“Let’s put real music back in the headlines and celebrate one of the UK’s greatest bands ever.”
If the campaign succeeds it will be the second time Simon Cowell will have been beaten to the top spot by a group of music fans with a marketing budget of zero. A No.1 in Feb can be achieved with as little as 30,000 sales so if the group continues to grow it is possible.

In order for The Smiths to stand a chance the group states:
Sales will count from 00:00 on Jan 31 through to 23:59 on Feb 6.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD before the date above. If you are not sure download on a week day.

It could become tiresome in the long run if this keeps happening but for now it’s great to shake things up. The UK charts are dominated by celebs and manufactured pop. Maybe this will open a few peoples minds to the great music out there and give some much needed focus to up and coming new and original acts.
Exactly why people ae doing it but we never hear these new artists because charts are filled with factory pop.
